POLICY STATEMENTS

 

1. MISSION STATEMENT

Dance4health, The African Approach To Fitness is a dance group that is open to the community with the aim of promoting the Family Unit and marketing its goodies. We also aim to provide an exciting and safe environment for all individuals of all ages to learn new dance routines while perfecting their performance skills. Our main objectives are to improve and sustain health and wellbeing & rebuilding relationships with a taste of Nigerian Igbo heritage and culture.

We aim to improve participant’s wellness, self-confidence, fitness, but importantly, to provide an environment where to have fun and meet new friends. This classes will promote cultural dance-exercises and other activities to encourage parent and children bonding. This will help to impact on current societal issues around gun and knife crimes, teenage pregnancy, peer pressure and other family and peer challenges.

 

 

2. CODE OF CONDUCT

CODE OF CONDUCT FOR DANCERS

Dance4Health is fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the well-being of all dancers and staff/ volunteers associated with the group. To ensure the effective running of the group and to protect all individuals connected to it, it is important that the following codes of conduct are read, always respected and adhered to:

• Dancers must participate within the group’s rules and respect all the instructors and their decisions.

• Dancers must respect their fellow dancers.

• Dancers must arrive for sessions on time or inform the Dance instructor if they are going to be late.

• Dancers must not distract, bully or harass other dancers during the class.

• Dancers must not use bad language.

• Dancers must always be polite and display good manners.

• Dancers must treat all equipment with respect.

• Dancers must wear the Dance4Health T-shirt and a comfortable joggy-bottom for classes.

• All body jewellery must be removed.

• Long hair must be tied.

• Food, drink and chewing gum are strictly prohibited in dance studios (dancers may bring a sealed drinking bottle, but it must only contain water and must be clearly labelled with the dancer’s name on).

• All litter must be placed in the bins provided.

• Please leave all valuables at home – Dance Art Studio will not be held responsible for the loss of any items.

• Mobile phones and other electronic devices must be switched off in the dance studio.

• Dancers must inform the Dance instructor before the warm up begins if they have an injury or illness.

• Dancers must inform their instructor immediately if they begin to feel ill or sustain an injury during the class.

• Dancers must remain with the instructor at the end of the session if they are to be picked up by their parent or guardian.

• FINALLY ALL DANCERS MUST ENTER THE CLASS WITH A SMILE AND HAVE FUN!!

 

CODE OF CONDUCT FOR PARENTS / GUARDIANS

Dance4Health is fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the well-being of all dancers, members and staff associated with the group. To ensure the effective running of sessions and to protect all individuals connected with the group, it is important that the following codes of conduct are read, always respected and adhered to :

• Encourage your child to learn the rules and perform within them.

• Arrive with plenty of time to get your child ready for their sessions and ensure they have been to the toilet before the session begins - Always inform the Dance Teacher if you are going to be late.

• Always ensure your child is dressed appropriately with long hair tied up and make sure they have had plenty to drink.

• No Parent/Guardian will be allowed in to the studio during classes if they are not participating.

• Discourage challenging and inappropriate conduct towards the instructor and other dancers.

• Help your child to recognise good performance and progression.

• Be realistic about their ability and do not set expectations too high - It can be very damaging for children if they feel they are falling short of their parents’ expectations.

• Discourage comparison against other dancers - Each dancer is an individual with different goals and objectives and they must be praised on their own personal achievement.

• Never force your child to take part - Children must participate in dancing for their own pleasure and enjoyment not their parent's.

• Set a good example within the dancer’s environment by recognising good sportsmanship and applauding good performances of all.

• Never punish or belittle a child for poor performance or making mistakes. It is through mistakes that performers learn and develop as a dancer.

• Always use correct and proper language.

• Encourage and guide your child to accept responsibility for their own performance and behaviour.

• Keep the Dance instructor informed if your child is ill or unable to attend classes.

• Endeavour to establish good communications with the school, teachers and staff for the benefit of all.

• Never challenge or threaten an instructor or member of the Dance4Health team. Any concerns must follow the approved channels as outlined in the complaints and grievance procedure.

• Do not raise issues of disagreement publicly.

• Always collect your child promptly at the end of a session.

• All fees must be paid on time otherwise your child may risk losing their place in the session.

• Always support your child's involvement and help them to enjoy themselves.

Please understand that breach of this code of conduct may have repercussions and in extreme cases may result in your child/children losing their place at the sessions.

 

DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURE

Failure to abide by this code of conduct may lead to exclusion.

 

 

3. CHILD PROTECTION POLICY

AIM

Whilst the prime focus of Dance4Health is to create a great session for its dancers, we recognise that the safety, welfare and care of children in our group is paramount. We are always therefore committed to the highest standards in protecting and safeguarding children entrusted to our care.

We will ensure that arrangements are in place for:

• All reasonable measures will be taken to minimise the risks of harm to children’s welfare;

• All appropriate actions will be taken to address concerns about the welfare of a child, or children, working to agreed local policies and procedures in full partnership with other local agencies;

• All our instructors will be made aware of this policy.

• We recognise that some children may be the victims of neglect, physical, sexual or emotional abuse, so we will by our day to day contact and knowledge of the children, be well placed to identify such abuse and offer support to children in need.

To protect children, we will aim to:

• Create an atmosphere where all our children can feel secure, valued and listened to

• Recognise signs and symptoms of abuse

• Respond quickly and effectively to cases of suspected abuse

• Monitor and support children at risk

• Use our sessions to raise children’s awareness, build confidence and skills

• Work closely with parent/carers and support external agencies

• Ensure that all our instructors have been checked as to their suitability.

Dance4Health will support all children by:

• Encouraging self-esteem and appropriate self-assertiveness whilst not condoning aggression or bullying

• Promoting a caring, safe and positive environment during our dance sessions.

• Liaising and working together with all other support services and those agencies involved in the safeguarding of children.

• Notifying Social Care Services via the approved mechanisms as soon as there is a significant concern.

Designated personnel

• Designated Senior Person (DSP) for Child Protection Ijeoma Nweze.

The role of all members and other persons

• All members and other persons have a duty to safeguard children. This policy outlines how members and other persons can meet this duty and (where applicable) their need to be: -

• Trained and aware of potential indicators of abuse

• Open to hearing concerns from children and others, without seeking to investigate these concerns.

• Informed on how to report any concerns to their Designated Senior Person(s) for Child Protection.

• Informed on how to report any concerns relating to members and other persons to our dance instructors.

• Informed on how to report any concerns relating to their Convention Manager/Venue Manager etc.

Listening to children is a fundamental role of all persons working with children.  Any observations, which could potentially indicate abuse, should be carefully noted. It is important to:

• Create the opportunity and environment for children to be able to talk about their concerns

• Establish systems to enable cover for our instructors to a child’s concerns.

 

Always:

• Report on as soon as there is a concern.

• Record information verbatim using the actual words of the child and noting any questions raised by the child.

• Note dates, times, who was present, positions in the room, anything factual about the child’s appearance.

• Pass these notes to the DSP.

• If possible use a silent witness.

 

Never

• Ask leading questions.

• Ask the child to write down their account.

• Investigate with, or without, others.

• Take photographs of marks.

• Attempt any medical judgement

• Arrange a medical examination

• Tape/video record an interview

• Ask a child to remove any clothing. Individuals should always be aware of their own vulnerability at this point and should take steps to minimise risk to themselves whilst supporting the child.

We recognise that all matters relating to Child Protection are confidential. The DSP or Chaperone will disclose any information about a child to other members of the production on a need to know basis only.

Supporting Personnel

We recognise that other personnel working in the industry/company who have become involved with a child who has suffered harm or appears to be likely to suffer harm may find the situation stressful and upsetting.

We will support such personnel by providing an opportunity to talk through their anxieties with the DSP and to seek further support as appropriate.

All personnel can access confidential support and counselling

The role of the Designated Senior Person (DSP)

The DSP is responsible for:

• Adhering to the local authority’s Safeguarding Children Board and the group’s procedures about referring a child if there are concerns about possible abuse

• Keeping written records of all concerns about a child even if there appears to be no need to make an immediate referral

• Ensuring that all such records are kept confidentially and securely and are separate from child records

• Ensuring that an indication of further record-keeping is marked on the child records

• Liaison and joint working with Social Care Services, and other relevant agencies

Reporting Procedures

All concerns must be passed to the DSP who will seek advice/make a judgement as to whether a referral to Social Care Services or the need for any other action to be taken.

If a disclosure is made or an instructor has reason to believe abuse has occurred an incident report should be completed as soon as possible and passed to the DSP. Any original notes should be signed, dated and securely attached to the incident report form. All members must be aware of the high level of confidentiality of notes and individual members should pass all notes and records onto the DSP.

Upon submitting a report, the individual and the DSP should catalogue the form, sign and date the incident book to prove the procedure has been followed.

 

Staff allegations

All child protection allegations against a dance instructor must be reported directly to the Child protection agency directly (and not the DSP) without informing the subject of the concern/allegation.

The full evidence will be made available to the individual subject of the allegation as soon as is agreed appropriate within the ongoing needs of any investigation by the Police, Social Care Services, or by any disciplinary process.

In some cases, it may be necessary for the individual to be suspended whilst an investigation is carried out. It must be recognised that any decision to suspend a member of the organisation is without prejudice and on full pay (if applicable) and is not an indication of any proof or of any guilt.

Any complaint or concern of a child protection nature received by any person and relating to a dance instructor must be passed in confidence to the DSP who will give advice and support including contacting the Social Services team.

All dance instructors need to be aware of their vulnerability to allegations and must address their practice accordingly. All members must adhere to the organisation’s policy/guidance in respect to safe conduct.

Include references to:

• Risk Assessment

• Out of hours contact with children

• Use of letters, mobile phones, texts and emails

• Use of Internet code of conduct

• Visibility in any individual contact with children

• Ensuring parental consent where individual work with children is required

• Areas of practice requiring joint work/paired work.

• Communication and confidentiality policy/guidance

Children cannot be expected to raise concerns in an environment where members fail to do so. All dance instructors should be aware of their duty to raise concerns, where they exist, about the attitude or actions of colleagues.

Procedure

Dance4Healths adhere to the Newham Safeguarding Children Board (LSCB) procedures.

The DSP will ensure the following reporting and recording procedures are maintained:

• Incident report form (catalogued and cross references to the incident book)

• Incident book (hard bound, containing consecutive numbers of report forms, name of child, name, signature and date of person submitting the report, name, signature and date `of DSP receiving the report.)

 

Parents and Carers

Parents and carers will be made aware of the Dance4Health’s policy through published information on our website.

A copy of this policy is available to all parents, carers and children upon request.

Teaching and Learning

The sessions will be used to raise children’s awareness and build confidence so that they have a range of strategies to support their own protection and understanding of protecting others.

Dance4Health will promote child support services and display of contact information, e.g. Childline,

 

Training

All our dance instructors will receive training on child protection procedures and will receive updates and refreshers as necessary.

The DSP undertake core training to carry out her role and will be required to attend refresher training updates every 2 years.

Child Protection training will be clearly cross referenced and supplemented by other areas of training for the dance instructors, including appropriate touch, care & control (including safe restraint), behaviour management and risk assessment.
